Goals from strikers Ricky-Jade Jones and Mo Eisa couldn’t save Peterborough United from a second defeat of the day at the hands of Coventry City at the Weston Homes Stadium today (August 29).

Posh went down 3-2 in match number two after a strong finish to the game just failed to deliver a draw.

Coventry had bossed most of the match and went 3-1 ahead midway through the second-half, but Eisa’s expert finish 15 minutes from time following a precise through ball from young Flynn Clarke set up a decent finale. Clarke came closest to equalising with a deflected strike that landed on the roof of the net just before Harrison Burrows shot straight at ‘keeper Ben Wilson when well placed on the edge of the area.

Wilson was less impressive in the first half when an attempt to dribble out of his own six yard box proved a disastrous decision as Jones tackled him and watched the ball dribble over the line.

That was eight minutes after Coventry had taken a 22nd minute lead through Amadou Bakayoko with another goal which probably had a goalkeeper shaking his head in disappointment.

Posh number one Dan Gyollai got a good hand on Bakayoko’s shot, but couldn’t keep the ball out of the net. Eisa losing possession on halfway was also a factor in the goal.

Posh started brightly with Frazer Blake-Tracy threatening at a corner, but the visitors were soon in control.

Teenage centre-back Ronnie Edwards, who looked classy and composed, made a fine block to thwart Bakayoko before he scored, while Gyollai tipped a Jodi Jones free kick over the bar to keep the scores level.

Edwards was lucky not to concede a penalty with a blatant trip which the referee decided took place outside the area before Eisa saw two shots charged down late in the half.

Coventry started the second half the stronger and Jodi Jones scored a superb goal from the edge of the area in the 56th minute before Bakayoko added his second, volleying home a brilliant cross from Gervabe Kastaneer in the 63rd minute.

To their credit a young Posh side rallied, but suffered a late blow when Jones picked up an injury while trying to block a clearance.
