Suspended Peterborough election candidates will stay on ballot papers

As revealed by the Peterborough Telegraph on Wednesday, two Labour candidates for next week’s Peterborough City Council elections have been suspended, while a Conservative candidate is also believed to have been suspended.

For Labour Cllr Angus Ellis (Bretton) and Richard Strangward (West) have both been administratively suspended while the party investigates alleged antisemitism.

For the Conservatives, Ishfaq Hussain (Dogsthorpe), has reportedly had the party whip removed for posts on Facebook which he acknowledged “echoed antisemitic tropes in ways I had not fully understood”.

Despite this, all three candidates will remain on ballot papers alongside the parties they were originally selected by, Peterborough City Council has confirmed.

The elections take place on Thursday, May 6 and will see 23 out of 60 seats at the Town Hall contested.

Labour has suspended nine of its 17 councillors in recent weeks, although of those only Cllr Ellis is standing for re-election.
