A training scheme which recruits the best experienced carers and sets them on course for attractive salaries has had a positive launch.

Six members of staff at PJ Care have started the new scheme, which has multiple benefits. The Care Home Practitioners or ‘CHAPS’ training means staff can offer even better care for residents , but also values and rewards existing staff or new recruits who are ready for the next step up.

Staff who complete the training can go on to become Care Practitioners which allows them to earn up to £12 an hour.

The feedback from the first cohort of entries – existing PJ Care staff who have successfully applied for the new training – has been really positive, both about the training itself, the support from line managers and the confidence gained along the way.

Renju Johny said: “The study has been hard work but I’ve had lots of support from the managers at PJ Care. Being able to learn practical skills at work has been so useful; it’s the best place to learn. I can ask the nurses anything if I’m not sure, they never make me feel as if it’s a silly question.”

Renju added: “I’m thrilled to have passed these assessments and exams. The support I get from the nurses and my manager gave me the confidence to go for it. They’ve encouraged me to now apply for one of the care practitioner jobs. It would mean more money for me, which is always a good thing, but it would also give me the chance to take on new challenges, have more responsibility and do even more for the residents.

“It makes me really happy to think that I‘d be able to do even more for them. I’m excited about where this could take me”.

PJ Care is committed to identifying staff from within its own organisation who are ready for more responsibility and rewards, and to recruiting external candidates who already have an NVQ3 and five or more years of senior experience. As well as giving enhanced qualifications at work, if candidates are interesting in pursuing further career development into nursing, this is a natural next step.

Learning as they work, there are a series of practical assessments and theoretical studies, aimed at boosting competence, knowledge and skill, and helping colleagues grow in confidence for the next stage of their career.

Are you ready to take the next step?

If you have at least five years senior carer experience, and already have at least an NVQ3, you could be the ideal candidate.
